Astronaut - Guy Laliberté

Guy Laliberté - Citizen Spaceflight Astronaut

Post Series: Space Tourists

The founder of the world famous Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberté, became the first private Canadian citizen to make it to space when he flew to the ISS aboard Soyuz TMA-16 in September of 2009.

However, the aim of his mission was not to conduct scientific research, but to raise awareness of his ONE DROP Foundation, which is dedicated to making clean drinking water available to people in developing countries.

To this end, Laliberté hosted a live event from space, in which artists from around the world performed in 14 cities around the planet. Some famous people involved in this initiative included Al Gore, Shakira, Peter Gabriel, and the band U2.
