Astronaut Anousheh Ansari

Anousheh Ansari - Citizen Spaceflight Astronaut

Post Series: Space Tourists

When space tourism resumed with the Discovery mission (STS-114) in July of 2005 after the Colombia tragedy, Iranian-born Anousheh Ansari became the first female private space tourist when she flew to the ISS on Soyuz TMA-9 on September 18th, 2006, since the return of the Shuttle fleet to active service had freed up seats on the Russian Soyuz rockets.

A shining example of the American dream, Ansari came to the US when she was a teenager that could not speak English, but despite her late start, she has nevertheless inspired millions of youngsters to chase their dreams by actively advocating awareness of the possibilities presented by private space flight, which she has dedicated her life to.

While on the ISS, Ansari conducted several scientific experiments for the European Space Agency.
